Rabbie Burns at The Winking Owl Aviemore

Rabbie Burns at The Winking Owl Aviemore.

Rabbie Burns undertook a tour of the Scottish Highlands with William Nichol from 25th August to 15th September 1787 in a horse drawn covered carriage. While he conducted this journey, he wrote a journal containing 35 un-numbered sides.

On Page 12 of his Journal, he describes his dinner companions at Blair castle including all the children. The most important for Burns's future being Robert Graham. The sheet of pencil notes written on the road up to Aviemore, follow with other notes after Aviemore are rough notes not Journal script.

On Page 13 are notes out of sequence with Journal describing parts of journey to Inverness. The Journal continues on with the climb through the pass to Dalwhinnie, lunch stop and on to Pitmain (Kingussie) for the night. Early start to Aviemore for breakfast at The Winking Owl and lunch at Castle Grant (Grantown) with Sir James Grant.

Full details of the Journal can be found at The National Burns Collection.
