Bob Scotts Bothy at Derry Lodge in the Cairngorms certainly offers quality Self Catering!

Enjoyed good company as well as an excellent array of food and drink a couple of weeks ago in the Bothy which is run by the Mountain Bothies Association.

One of the pleasures of using bothy accommodation is the variety of colourful characters which you meet. On this particular stay, two young female teachers from Perth Grammar School were keeping a watchful eye over a silver group doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award Assessment. Throw in a young chap practising his knots and three rock climbers from Aberdeen Mountaineering Club who had cycled in from Braemar and it makes for an interesting evening!

Apologies to all for being boring and snoring!

These 2 Holiday Homes are some of the most remote in Scotland. Overlooking Loch Ossian they offer a superb holiday base.

Sgor Ghaibre, which means “Peak of the Goat,” is semi-detached from Sgor Choinnich (sleeping 8) and dates as far back as 1861 when built as keepers' quarters. It has been restored to offer a perfect holiday retreat for those who wish to get away from it all without roughing it. The surrounding gardens and lawns have been currently reinstated and provide a pleasant contrast to the dramatic scenery surrounding the house.

One of the best railway journeys in Scotland is the trip across Rannoch Moor to Rannoch Station.

The book "Iron Road to the Isles” by Michael Pearson quotes:

"Arguably RANNOCH is one of the most romantic railway destinations in the world. It stands in splendid isolation, eighty seven miles from Glasgow, thirty five miles from Fort William, and a little matter of sixteen from Kinloch Rannoch, the nearest settlement of any size. Panic sets in as the train rumbles away into the distance: "What am I doing here, I must have been mad to get off the train," Then slowly but surely your confidence returns, stress evaporates and a sense of well-being takes over. There’s no signal for your mobile phone, you cannot be got at, an invigorating feeling of optimism and potential manifests itself in your mind. However long you are here for, it is not time to be killed, but time to be treasured".

It's good to know that after the long drive to Rannoch Station that there is a Hotel there to offer some good old fashioned Scottish hospitality. Whether it's afternoon tea or a substantial meal you're after the Moor of Rannoch Hotel will fit the bill.

We arrived there last year to find the Harry Potter film crew flying about in a helicopter filming the Hogwarts Express! Needless to say, the Hotel was very busy that day!

The magnificent Mar Lodge provides superb self catering accommodation within Mar Lodge Estate in the Cairngorms National Park.

Mar Lodge Estate offers five elegant and comfortable holiday apartments within Mar Lodge and the economical accommodation of the Base Camp.

The accommodation sleeps from 2 to 15 people and is available for short breaks as well as for full weeks and can be booked for use during the festive season.

The Estate contains a diversity and range of habitats from the valley floor at 300 metres to the mountain tops, the highest being Ben Macdui at 1309 metres.
The Cairngorms is the largest area of arctic alpine flora in Britain and, in particular, has the largest area of three-leaved rush (Juncus trifidus) heath in the world. The flora is one of the least modified by man, and snow bed, lichen and bryophytes communities are of special interest. In the montane zone there are also important breeding populations of dotterel, snow bunting and ptarmigan.

The Estate supports areas of wet and dry heath as well as extensive areas of blanket bog. The heather moorland extends to an altitude of 1000 metres and there is significant potential for regeneration of scrub communities in the lower altitudes of this zone. The moorland supports important populations of red grouse, waders and raptors.


Mar Lodge Estate has 3 areas of native Caledonian woodland covering almost 800 hectares. This habitat is important for red squirrel, black grouse, capercaillie, Scottish crossbill, parrot crossbill, wood ants, other invertebrates and fungi.
The high level oligotrophic lakes are of arctic-alpine character and of international importance. The Estate holds a large part of the headwaters of the river Dee, an important spawning ground for spring-run salmon, and is the finest example of an oligotrophic river system in Britain. The Quoich wetlands are an important area for breeding waders.

We took this line from Rannoch Station to Corrour Station one Bank Holiday to climb the corbett Leum Uilleim, Williams Leap. The return train only left 2 hours to climb the hill, so it was one of the quickest hills we've done.

Loch Ossian is one of my favourite places in Scotland. The fact that it's not on any road network makes it the perfect get away from it all holiday destination. You can get there on foot or by catching the train as it heads for Fort William.

The Youth Hostel at Loch Ossian offers self catering accommodation at bargain prices. It is part of the network of inexpensive hostels offered by the Scottish Youth Hostels Association all over Scotland. They are situated in some of the most beautiful parts of Scotland and provide cooking facilities as well as budget accommodation.

Camping on the Isle of Rum. The tents are pitched in the middle of the island which isn't perfect. There are better sites over on the West of the Island at Harris, whilst there is also bunkhouse self catering accommodation at Kinloch Castle.

We were delighted to see young kids being tended to by their mother when walking near Slioch, Loch Maree. We've come across a number of Wild Goats in our travels but these animals were part of the biggest herd we've ever seen.

The Sligachan Hotel on the Isle of Skye is a popular stopping off point for holidaymakers. They serve excellent food and their own real ale made on the premises.
