Ballater (2 miles) is probably best known for its train station, which was Queen Victoria’s first port of call on her inaugural visit to Balmoral in 1848. While the station is no longer in use, it has been preserved, and nowadays houses an elegant tearoom. In addition, Ballater offers a variety of interesting shops, inns and eating establishments. Deeside is a haven for outdoors enthusiasts. Leisurely walks can be enjoyed along the scenic banks of the River Dee, while the really adventurous can tackle some the region’s famous mountains; the Balmoral Ranger’s Visitor Centre on the shores of Loch Muik provides the ideal starting point for many of these walks. There are also good opportunities for canoeing and mountain biking, and even skiing during the winter months. Inexpensive golf courses are easily accessible in Braemar, Ballater and Banchory. Braemar is also famous for its Highland Games, the annual Braemar Gathering, which were first held in the 11th century. Castles and gardens can be found at Balmoral and Crathes as well as Craigievar. For a day trip, Aberdeen is within easy driving distance. The city’s striking architecture has earned it the name ‘The Granite City’, and the buildings are transformed into sparkling silver in the rain. Some of the many attractions in the city include the Art Gallery with its fine collection, the wonderful Anthropological Museum and the Winter gardens.
