River Tay from Kinnoull Hill 31st July 2010
River Tay from Kinnoull Hill, 31st July 2010.
We're lucky in Perth, Scotland to have the walks on Kinnoull Hill so close to the City Centre. The views from the summit are outstanding, yet it takes only fifteen minutes to reach. A network of paths though, allows you to spend as much time as you want, walking in this peaceful woodland.
Enjoyed the views of the River Tay today, 31st July 2010.

Marsco, Isle of Skye, 27th July 2010.
Some misty views from Sligachan, Isle of Skye, today 27th July 2010. On entering the Hotel for lunch there were no hills to be seen, so at least they appeared after an enjoyable meal!

Go for a walk in the Cairngorms.
Photographs taken in Summer 2009 of a fantastic walk in the Cairngorms National Park around Loch Avon. The Cairngorms offer a great variety of walks from woodland strolls to strenuous munro bagging!

Summit Cairn Ben Challum 20th July 2010
Summit Cairn, Ben Challum, 20th July 2010.
Having endured the rain and mist on our walk up Ben Challum on 20th July 2010, it was great to bask in the sunshine at the summit cairn. The views changed every minute with fantastic swirling clouds hugging the many munros in view.

Walk Ben Challum Crianlarich Scotland
Walk Ben Challum, Crianlarich, Scotland.
Enjoyed a walk with my wife and daughter on Ben Challum near Crianlarich, Scotland on Tuesday 20th July 2010. We started at Kirkton Farm near Crianlarich, where the West Highland Way passes on the way to Tyndrum. The walk is a steady rise over the grassy slopes with a number of boggy areas, to the south top of Ben Challum, before a short descent and ascent to the summit itself.
I enjoyed the profusion of wild flowers and fungi, particularly now that the Scottish bluebell is in bloom. The views on a clear day are outstanding and we were lucky enough for the sky to clear at the top, showing us to be above some of the clouds! The Crianlarich hills and Ben Lui munros kept a skirt of cloud all day whilst the local corbetts and grahams were clear. There's something to be said for walking these lower hills when there's cloud about!

Heather in the Scottish Borders 18th July 2010
Heather in the Scottish Borders, 18th July 2010.
It was nice to see the young heather plants growing through the burnt remains of the old heather on our walk today in the Scottish Borders. Many other wild flowers were on show along with one of my favourite plants the cloudberry. The berries weren't quite ready yet, but we did enjoy some wild cherries at the end of our walk!
We climbed four of the Manor Hills, Middle Hill, Dollar Law, Pykestone Hill and Drumelzier Law for a round of approximately 16km in four and a half hours. The day started brightly in glorious sunshine, but unfortunately this didn't last and the views deteriorated in the mist. Part of the walk included the Thieves Road, which I believe got it's name from the number of robbers who stole the cattle from Drovers many years ago. It certainly helped us make better progress than walking through the heather!

Wild Fungi Perthshire Scotland Field Mushrooms
Wild Fungi, Perthshire, Scotland, Field Mushrooms.
Had a nice evening woodland walk tonight, 15th July 2010, picking some chanterelles for breakfast. On my return, crossing the football pitch I was amazed to find a flush of field mushrooms growing all over the pitch! I've played football there for the last 25 years and this is the first year I've seen these growing.
On reflection, I should have laid them out in a four, four two formation!

Wild Flowers in Scotland Lupin
Wild Flowers in Scotland, Lupin.
Relatively unusual to see white lupins on a walk in Scotland, but the lupin is one of my favourite wild flowers. These grow alongside Loch Ossian in the centre of Scotland. It is relatively remote, but the train passes nearby and it makes for a wonderful walk around the Loch amongst a myriad of flora and fauna.

Spey Dam, Scotland, 2nd November 2009.
Took this short video whilst heading off to climb the munro of Geal Charn in Glen Markie. On reviewing the video I was struck by the mesmerising effect of the water flowing over the dam.

Wild Fungi in Perthshire Chanterelle
Wild Fungi in Perthshire, Chanterelle, 12th July 2010.
The chanterelle are a bit later this year in Perthshire due to the dry period in June. Some of the patches that I'd normally be collecting from haven't appeared at all. The chanterelle is one of the easiest wild fungi to identify, although the false chanterelle does appear later in the Autumn. I enjoyed a nice evening walk tonight, 12th July 2010, and collecting a few chanterelles for my supper was the icing on the cake!

Walking into Coir a' Ghrunnda Skye Cuillin
Walking into Coir a' Ghrunnda, Skye Cuillin.
There is nothing that gives me a bigger thrill in the mountains of Scotland than walking into the magnificent Coir a' Ghrunnda in the Skye Cuillin. As we walked through the mist this week, the familiar feelings of uncertainty pervade the mind. This mystical place has to be visited on a misty day to appreciate our own insignificance.
The Lochan allows one to have a firm point of reference for navigation but it's not the first time I've almost stepped in the Lochan without knowing it is there! Eerie and silent, it truly is different to any other walking in Scotland or the UK.
In spite of the harsh conditions and solid rock, there are a number of wild flowers growing through, my personal favourite being roseroot.

Walk Arnaval Skye Scotland
Walk Arnaval, Skye, Scotland.
Another wee walk on the Isle of Skye, Arnaval provides views down to the wonderful Talisker Bay to the West, and Loch Harport to the North. A short but bracing walk on 7th July 2010 saw waterfalls being blown skywards.
