Cuillin Ridge Skye Sgurr Dubh an Da Beinn and Loch Coir' a'Ghrunnda

Cuillin Ridge, Skye, Sgurr Dubh an Da Beinn, and Loch Coir' a'Ghrunnda.

Coir' a'Ghrunnda provides access to the Cuillin Ridge from the Southern end. In mist it is one of the most intimidating places I have ever been. A sense of foreboding comes over you, as if you are daring to enter a different world. It is not a place for a novice hillwalker, but we found ourselves there many years ago. With the compass virtually useless due to the magnetism in the rock, it was a chastening experience, but one I treasure.

Camasunary Bothy Isle of Skye Scotland

Camasunary Bothy, Isle of Skye, Scotland.

I just love Camasunary Bothy on the Isle of Skye! It is situated below Blaven, one of my favourite Munros which is looked after by the John Muir Trust. The setting, by the sea, and beneath the majestic Cuillin Ridge make this the perfect holiday destination in Scotland. OK, so you have to walk or kayak to get there, and the accommodation is fairly simple, but give me the location every time!

Holiday Home with sea views Waternish Isle of Skye

Holiday Home with sea views, Waternish, Isle of Skye. Spectacularly perched above Camus Lusta, this spacious detached contemporary dwelling is located in an area of history and legend, much favoured by artists. With sightings of dolphins, eagles, otters and seals, Camus Edge makes an exciting holiday home for wildlife enthusiasts and a good touring base for Skye, Raasay and the Outer Isles. Staying on the island, it is a short 1-mile stroll along the beach to Stein, where the oldest inn on Skye can be found, as well as a seafood restaurant. Waternish lies as a peninsula to the north of Dunvegan, and is accessed by crossing the Fairy Bridge – reputedly the spot where a MacLeod chief (married to a fairy) bid his farewell to her. Also the merging point of three roads, and site of the religious assemblies of the Free Church, Dunvegan’s main tourist attraction today is its castle, the seat of the clan MacLeod since the 13th century. Within the present-day fortress (which dates from 1840), are three famous items of interest: Rory Mor’s Horn, the Dunvegan Cup and the Fairy Flag, each with their own piece of history. The Giant Angus MacAskill Museum is a more recent attraction to the village and is housed in a restored thatched smithy. To the west of Dunvegan, the Duirinish peninsula features two flat-topped peaks known as MacLeod’s Tables, and places of interest to visit include the Colbost Croft Museum where much can be gleaned from a collection of news cuttings about crofting life during the 19th century. Nearby is the renowned Three Chimneys restaurant. Borreraig Park, open daily, offers a retail outlet for Skye-produced crafts and also functions as an open-air museum of horsedrawn farm machinery. Formerly a famous piping college, the MacCrimmon Piping Heritage Centre at Borreraig makes for an interesting day out, whilst a little further afield on the Minginish peninsula, the Talisker whisky distillery near Carbost offers tours by appointment. Here production of the single malt with its distinctive smoky, peaty taste can be seen. Apart from good walking on the island, there is a diving centre for the adventurous, and also horse riding and boat trips to enjoy. Four steps to entrance. Large living/dining-room with open fire. Well-equipped modern fitted kitchen. Utility. Two double bedrooms, one with TV and en-suite shower room/W.C. Twin-bedded room and single bedroom, each with 2ft 6in beds. Self-catering Holiday Homes Kensaleyre Isle of Skye

Self-catering Holiday Homes, Kensaleyre, Isle of Skye. From their elevated position, these two single-storey holiday properties, Caladh Cottage and Caladh House, enjoy fine views across Loch Snizort (a sea loch), and out towards the hills beyond. Centrally situated on the Isle of Skye, both properties stand detached – Caladh House offering spacious accommodation for families (all bedrooms are en-suite), whilst the smaller, neat little Caladh Cottage, is more suited to a smaller group. Portree, although referred to by locals as ‘the village’, is the main town on the island, and lies 6 miles distant, with its selection of fine restaurants and lively pubs. Boat trips run from the little cliff-edged harbour, and also of interest is the Aros Centre which outlines the island’s history and has a children’s play area and way-marked forest trails, together with a theatre that shows films and hosts Gaelic concerts. The An Tuireann Arts Centre a mile or so out of Portree gives insight into contemporary visual arts, and stages concerts and exhibitions. For a taste of local entertainment, ceilidhs – Gaelic song and music evenings – are held on several evenings each week throughout the summer season. Within the area of Portree, bicycles can be hired and horse riding is available. The ferry terminal for the Outer Hebrides is just a short drive from Caladh, and the Whitewave activity centre, a similar distance away, offers canoeing. Diving can also be organised in Lochbay, towards Dunvegan. The famous Cuillin mountain range is about a 20-minute drive away and makes a great day out for the avid climber. A similar distance away lies Dunvegan Castle with its Fairy Flag (reputedly given to the Clan by fairies to protect them in times of danger) and history of the Clan MacLeod. The Clan MacDonald have their seat in the southern peninsula of Skye, together with their Clan and Heritage Centre set amidst splendid gardens, and from this area, the ferry leaves for the mainland at Mallaig. Sea safari trips also prove popular, and at Kyle of Lochalsh, trips in glass-bottom boats are available. Dotted throughout the area of Skye and Lochalsh are crafts shops to browse around and spectacular scenery to enjoy. Immediately across on the mainland lies picturesque Plockton – famous for its palm trees, and a favourite anchorage point for yachts.

Ben Lomond and Loch Lomond

Ben Lomond and Loch Lomond.

Ben Lomond is the southernmost Munro in Scotland and a very popular hill, being so close to the Central belt. It was encouraging to see so many young people out climbing the hill yesterday. This picture was taken two years ago from a pleasure craft on the Loch. Unfortunately, yesterday, the summit was enveloped in mist, with gusting winds.

The walk should take around five hours at a leisurely pace on a nice day. Get there early to avoid the crowds!

The Oban Distillery offers an interesting guided tour, with a welcome dram of whisky waiting at the end. Also a must see is McCaig’s Folly; built as an imitation of Rome’s Colosseum, it is well worth the ten-minute climb to admire the stunning panorama from this, one of the town’s chief landmarks.
For a day out, Glasgow has many attractions for all the family. The many museums include the Gallery of Modern Art, the People’s Palace and the Transport Museum.
