The Islands offer something for everyone, whether it be meandering along the quiet, unspoilt sandy beaches to scuba diving or visiting some of the many historic archaeological sites. A paradise for those who enjoy walking, cycling, fishing, photography or just relaxing on the beach and watching the ever-changing scenery. Orkney is made up of 70 or so islands with 17 islands currently inhabited and a visit to these outer islands will be a holiday never to be forgotten. Ferry trips can be taken from the Pier in Kirkwall. Steeped in history with a vibrant culture, there are festivals and events throughout all the seasons. Kirkwall offers a large variety of amenities including restaurants, pubs, leisure centre with swimming-pool and shops. St Magnus Cathedral (a spectacular Viking structure), Skara Brae, (a well preserved stone village) and Maeshowe, (a fine chambered cairn) are amongst the many attractions the Islands have to offer. Scapa Flow, The Italian Chapel and the Churchill Barriers form part of the more recent history of Orkney. The Islands are renowned for their stunning scenery and an abundance of wildlife.
